Smoking Not Allowedln Work Areas Sister Marie Celine Assumes New Position Sister Marie Celine has been appointed the Administrative Assistant in charge of Systems at Saint Joseph Hospital. In this position, she will visit the various departments to observe the communication system, the flow of paper work, and management techniques. This does not mean that there will be any reduction in personnel with the departments. This is simply an effort to solve some of the everyday problems which cause dissatisfaction among the employees and to improve our communications. On page 45 of the Employee policy book, which is distributed to every employee when hired, the policy on smoking is stated as follows: "Smoking is not only a fire hazard in a hospital, where so many combustible fluids and gases are in use, but is also unpleasant to many patients. Therefore, smoking is not permitted in any work areas. You may smoke in the cafeteria and other areas set aside for rest". Areas in which employees may smoke other than the cafeteria are the personnel lounge and the locker rooms. There have been several suggestions in the Suggestion Box with regard to the personnel being allowed to smoke everywhere in the hospital, including the nursing stations. After much thought, and after making a survey of the policies Allowed in other hospitals and in industry, the Administra- jn has decided to continue to enforce the smoking rule as it is stated in the employee policy book. We know that you will continue to co-operate with the Administration in observing this rule, which will be enforced by the Department Directors. Sister Marie Celine will also be studying systems in preparation for the installation of the IBM computer in September. She will be meeting with the Department Directors, the supervisors and the employees in each of the departments to work on various problems. She has begun working in the Laboratory, Switchboard and Central Service. Service Elevators Needed For Patient Use The two service elevators which are located on the south side of the hospital are very important to our patients. They provide the sole means of transportation for our patients from their rooms to surgery, x-ray, physical therapy, and a number of other treatment areas. So that we can provide the best care for our patients, administration has requested that employees do not use these elevators, and feel assured of your full co-operation.
