'6 TOWKRTALK Kim Allen, Executive Intern from East High School, has been learning about the Hospital life first hand this semester under the sponsorship of Sister Mary Walter, Vice President of Clinical Services. Kim spends four afternoons a week at SJH, and attends a seminar each Wednesday with other student interns at East High School as part of a full-credit program. Kim sees a different depart- ment of the Hospital each day. She hopes to become a surgeon and has already had the opportunity to observe surgery at SJH. "It's a chance to see the real world," she says. Crafts Needed On 2 Center Do you have arts, crafts, or needlework projects or materials that you bought but never had time to use? Those materials are too good to throw out, but if your time is still limited, your decor has changed, or your interests have changed, donate them to 2 Center. Two Center is a high-risk antepartum unit where a majority of patients are admitted during early pregnancy to stay until they deliver. Patients are admitted for rest, observation, evaluation, and treatment of a variety of conditions. The staff is collecting arts, crafts, and needlework materials to give to patients during their stay to help them endure long hospitalizations. They will gladly accept any materials you want to donate (including projects already started). As you do your spring cleaning this year, bring any projects you would like to donate to 2 Center. Phase Two Smoking Policy Denned Since Saint Joseph Hospital announced its smoking policy March 1, reaction among hospital employees has been predominantly positive - understandably so since most employees do not smoke. The second phase of the policy will take effect June 1. As of that date, employees may smoke only in designated areas, and those areas do not include the Towerteria, restrooms, elevators, stairways, solariums, public lounges, or the lobbies. After considerable study of how to accommodate everyone concerned, smokers and non-smokers, the following areas have been designated as smoking areas until September 1. Ground Floor: Locker Room across from the Dental Clinic First Floor: Laboratory Locker Room Third Floor: 3N Employee Lounge; 3S Employee Lounge Fifth Floor: 5W Employee Lounge; 5N Employee Lounge Seventh Floor: Employee Lounge Tenth Floor: Employee Lounge Mullen Building: Employee Lounge After September 1, smoking by hospital employees will be prohibited in all areas of the hospital. Towertalk Published monthly by the Office of Public Relations President: Sister Mary Andrew Medical Staff President: John Nye, M.D. Director, Public Relations: Anne-marie Zuccarelli Editor: Mary Halloran Writer: Pat Barker Design: Pam Zachary Photographer: Nancy Kuhl Department Reporters: Cheryl Wiggins, 2 Center Gladys Pino, Respiratory Therapy Jennie Sena, Telecommunications Millie Webb, Pharmacy Cindy Timms, HRIS Lori Benefiel, Cardiovascular Lab Cathy Bertsch, Plant Engineering Elnora Zachary, Central Service Lucy Prunk, Nursing Service Cindy Vigil, Physical Therapy Pauline O'Donnell, Food Services Ida Schneider, Environmental Services and Linen Service Debbie Reinberg, Financial Services Jacquie Harvey, Cardiac Care Unit Deb Foust, Materiel Management Denise Robinson, Surgery Aline Hart, Business Office Women's Pavilion CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 and Education.
