The January 29 blood drive held at the Aurora Mall, sponsored by SJH and KIMN Radio, was tremendously successful. One- hundred twenty-six units of blood were donated, over twice the amount collected last year. The KIMN Chicken was on hand to give a hand to Vonnie Gallagher, RN, Team Leader, Donor Room (right) and other SJH technicians who collected blood and gave away several hundred SJH Dlood Dank balloons. c^ V^"\V"^^ tL* t~\ �~\ <-JW V ^*N* Chaplain's Corner by Fr. Don Spitzko Remember the days when Catholics were expected to fast during Lent? In some ways fosring seemed gloomy ond austere, often silly for being poorly understood and mechanically practiced � like some meaningless ritual from the Middle Ages. But even though fasting may have seemed lacking in humanity, there was a point in it still worth saving, precisely for the sake of humanity. The emptiness in the stomach reminds us of our hungers � for God, meaning, dignity and purpose in our lives. Even the growl of an empty stomach can speak to us of our insatiable longings and aspirations, something larger than ourselves ond worth giving our hearts to. Health Reach To the Community Health Reach is the new name for Saint Joseph Hospital educational programs designed to provide the community with current and useful information within the health care field. Resources for these programs utilize hospital staff as well as other local and national experts, and locations include SJH and other area facilities accessible to the interested public. SJH staff are invited to participate in any of the workshops offered. The following is a listing of Health Reach programs for the coming months. All offer continuing education credit for nurses. For additional information and to register, please call the Education Department at extension 7375. Children's Reactions to Life Threatening Illnesses in Others. The half-day conference scheduled Saturday, February 26, is a repeat of the successful conference offered last October. A panel of expert speakers is featured. The conference meets 9 a.m. to noon in the Assembly Room. The cost is $10. Sudden Death: Help for Survivors and Care Givers. This all-day conference on Thursday, March 17, features Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of the national bestseller, When Dad Things Happen To Good People. The conference meets 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church at 1980 Dahlia Street. The cost is $30, which includes lunch ($15 for students and persons over 65). Care Sharing. This workshop meets on Tuesday, March 29, noon to 1 p.m. in the Assembly Room. Camille Maurice, social worker and national speaker, will present the workshop. Risk � The Way To Grow.
