ADMINISTRATION - Sister Mary Andrew attended the second annual Medical Staff Conference on October 13 sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kan- sas for the Chiefs of Staff of their thirteen hospitals. Dr. Peter Tobin, Saint Joseph President of Staff; Dr. Samuel Childs President-elect; and Dr. Marvin Johnson, Director of Surgical Education, attended the meeting also. Welcome back to Mrs. Shirley Butcher who is now sec- retary to Sister Mary Christopher and Mr. Frank McGregor. AUXILIARY - Congratulations to Miss Mary Ann Clark who was honored at the meeting for winning the Poetry Contest of the association. Miss Clark was awarded a gift certificate and Saint Joseph Auxiliary was given a silver bowl. COMMUNICATION - 1,765 children were supervised dur- ing September in the Story Room, which is for the child- ren of visitors to the Hospital. On Sunday, September 24 there were 124 children visited the Story Room, most of them between the ages of two and nine. DIETARY - A record number of 108,196 meals for a one month period was served during August 1967 in the Tower- teria. This compares to 102,256 in 1966. MAINTENANCE - A new Cor-Zero cart has recently been completed and is in use. Entry to the Visitors Lot has been simplified. Mr. Thomas O'Lear, Stationary Engineer, and his wife recently returned from vacationing in Hawaii. MEDICAL EDUCATION - Over 100 attended the Wel- coming Dinner for the 1967-68 House Staff sponsored by the Sisters on October 6th with much talent displayed by the Sisters, House Staff, Guests and Father Greenslade. Dr. John I. Smith will join the House Staff on December 1 as a second year Pathology Resident. He is a grad- uate of the University of Oklahoma Medical School and did his internship at St. Anthony's Hospital in Denver. Recruitment for the 1968-69 House Staff is taking place during October and November. Dr. Alfred Hicks, Dr. JMarvin Johnson, Dr. C. H. Alexander, Dr. George Basque and Dr. Jerry Youmans are visiting medical schools in Chicago, Illinois; Omaha, Nebraska; Washington D.C.; St. Louis, Missouri; Milwaukee Wisconsin; Indianapolis, Indiana; Detroit, Michigan; and Ann Arbor, Michigan. HEALTH SERVICE DESIGNED FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH As you know, the Health Service in our Out-Patient De- partment is operated for your benefit for illnesses of a, minor nature. Several changes have been made, effective \ immediately, in the procedure to be followed should you become ill while on the job. Authorization for Health Service is given by the immediate supervisor, who will notify the Out-Patient Department by telephone regarding the referral. Problems of com- municable disease and public health such as sore throats and colds, as well as emergency illnesses of a medical nature, such as headaches, faintings, nose bleeds, etc., may be referred to the Out-Patient Department at any time during the day. OPD will then make arrangements for the patient to be seen by one of the house doctors if necessary, Charges Explained Initial examinations are without cost to you, but a charge will be made for medications, laboratory, x-ray, or phy- sical therapy treatments prescribed. Cash payments are required for all prescriptions and other out-patient charges at the time they are obtained, or if over $2, employee may authorize a payroll deduction for them. Permanent part-time and permanent full-time employees will be allowed a 20% discount on these pharmacy and out-patient charges not covered by insurance. Discounts are not granted to employees in a probationary status. If you become ill at work, ask your supervisor to referi you to Health Service. These women graduated from the class in September, and have been busy the last few weeks learning the procedures on the patient floors.. Congratulations to Dr. Jerome Wiater, Rotating Intern, and his wife on the birth of a boy in September, and to Dr. James Drynan, Internal/ Medicine Resident II, and his wife on the birth of a son born October 18th.
