Dr. Robert Gleser, President of HealthMark, will manage the preventive health clinic at the club. Clinic services include comprehensive medical evaluation, programs on nutrition, exercise and stress management, sports medicine, physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation. With its opening, the Greenwood Athletic Club becomes Denver's premier health club facility with complete indoor and outdoor exercise facilities on an 11-acre fitness park. The club has an eight-lane, 25-meter swimming pool, a college court gymnasium, indoor running track, comprehensive weight training center, racquetball and squash courts, a cardiovascular training area with a full range of computerized equipment and two exercise studios. Outdoor fitness facilities include four tennis courts, a jogging trail, volleyball court and a multi-acre fitness park with designed land and waterscaping. Saint Joseph Hospital and HealthMark have recently associated to provide preventive medicine and related services at both the Greenwood site and HealthMark's downtown location at the Brown Palace. The Hospital's Medical Staff provided a Physicians' Advisory Committee to facilitate the development of Greenwood Clinic* Book Rack This month the books we're featuring from the Health Reach Library are concerned with knowing more about the human body and how it functions. Perchance to Dream A Patient's Guide to Anesthesia is by Robert C. Brown, M.D., and gives us an inside look at the role of the anesthesiologist. "Presumably," Brown says, "the patient thinks that after an intra- venous injection of Pentothal the anesthesiologist can walk away___ The lack of information on the part of patients who have already been anesthetized is rather startling." In the first chapter of this fas- cinating book we learn that, "survival itself is closely linked to the skill of the person administer- ing anesthesia." This book gives its readers an idea of what happens to the body and the nervous system during surgery. Dr. Brown describes an operation from the time a patient is put to sleep to the time the patient regains consciousness, which testifies to the anesthesiologist's skill and art. Surely this book is must reading for anyone contemplating surgery or anyone who is simply curious about the latest medical techniques. The Amazing Brain by Robert Orstein is an equally fascinating book. A random selection from the book reads, "When the temporal lobe is electrically stimulated, some people report the feeling of being in two places at once: The memory of an event and the present coexist in the person's consciousness. Although fully conscious and aware of the operation going on, a person might suddenly feel she is also in a kitchen, 30 or 40 years before: the sound and smells seem real." The human brain seems almost overwhelming in its complexity, but the author supplies exceptionally clear diagrams and text. There is a reminder: "To follow the progress of the human brain, one must remember that it is designed primarily to run the human body! Mary Bell t I I
