ABMINGHWni/E Dear Employees: As we close out the fiscal year I would like to take this opportunity to look back on highlights of this year's activities. Saint Joseph Hospital: was selected as one of the 100 top performing hospitals in the U.S.; was chosen as a benchmark hospital for three cardiac processes; successfully implemented a bond placement generating $40 million in additional capital; received a bonus payment from Kaiser Permanente for the results achieved on the patient and physician satisfaction surveys; remodeled the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Mother/Baby Unit and the Oncology Unit; converted the Rehab unit to a Transitional Care Unit; opened Saint Christopher House; established three additional physician pods; and enjoyed a very successful JCAHO survey! While the above accomplish- ments are certainly impressive, perhaps the most significant Randy Hyp accomplishment this past fiscal year was the hospital-wide team effort to reduce expenses in light of decreased patient volume. As the tables below show, patient days for FY '94 were under budget by 7,402 days; however, operating expenses also were under budget. PATIENT DAYS Actual 117,028 Budget 124,430 Variance (7,402) OPERATING EXPENSES Actual $160,786,000 Budget $165,908,000 Variance ($5,123,000) SJH staff members celebrate the successful conclusion of the JCAHO survey at a party hosted by Sr. Marianna (center). By successfully adjusting expenses to correspond with decreased volume, Saint Joseph has been able to conclude this fiscal year with a net income that was on target. The decline in inpatient volume is not specific to Saint Joseph Hospitalit is a market wide trend. (Saint Joseph Hospital has gained in market share, both in terms of admissions and patient days.) Our successful reaction to the downward trend in inpatient days would not have happened without the participation of all Hospital employees. Reducing expenses in response to decreased patient volume remains a chal- lenge and will become even more critical in the months ahead. Thank you all for a job well done this past year! Next year is certain to be an interesting one full of opportunities for us all! I look forward to working with you, and I'm certain the staff at Saint Joseph will rise to the challenge of these interesting times!
