SAINT JOSEPH HOSPITAL'DENVER, COLORADO VOLUME 15, NUMDER 9 * DECEMDER 1992 Five New Peopled Choice Recipients Named k'k'k'^kkk: Dominic de Profio, Debbie Johnson-Sasso, Kay Thomas, Sandy Dewhurst, and Barbara Wertz have been selected from 25 employees, volunteers and physicians who were nominated for the People's Choice Award this quarter. The five winners were presented with People's Choice certificates at the December 3 Towertalk live sessions, awarded a cash prize of $150 and three months free parking. Each of the five will also be invited to and recognized at the 1993 Longterm Employee Dinner. The following are excerpts from nominations submitted to the committee selecting the People's Choice winners: Deacon Dominic de Profio Deacon Dominic de Profio, Pastoral Care, is a staff advocate who holds support groups for several units: He is a patient advo- cate with a warm, quiet, caring Debbie Johnson-Sasso attitude. He sees the best in each person; he models his spirituality and teaches the unteachables. "On several occasions," one nominator writes, "I have known him to visit patients after they left his floor. He has sought out families when the patient was in ICU. He takes time with each one and shows both interest and compassion. He is a cheerful, caring, gentle man." Debbie Johnson-Sasso, charge nurse, Coronary Care Unit, was nominated by an employee who says, "Your description of someone with good values, sounds as if you're describing Debbie. In her years as an employee of Saint Joseph Hospital, Debbie has grown from graduate nurse to CCU charge nurse. She prides herself on main- taining a unit and staff that take pride in delivering exceptional and state-of-the-art nursing care to the acute cardiac patient Despite what- <^/ister Marianna Bauder, the Sisters of Chanty ofLeavenworth, and the Administration of Saint Joseph Hospital join in wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a new year filled with peace. ever technology, pharmacology or time constraint exists, her goal, priority and concern are all focused on the individual patients and their needs." Kay Thomas, R.N., DOSA "is kind, caring and goes that extra mile," according to her nomination. The employee who nominated her cited two specific incidents. In the first, Kay took the time to contact a surgeon, the pharmacy, and the family of an elderly patient who could not remember what medica- tions she was on, how long she had Kay Thomas, R.N. been taking the medications or how often she took them. As a result of Kay's efforts, the patient's surgery was canceled until sufficient infor- mation could be gathered. The patient had the surgery eventually and had an excellent result Kay's caring also extends beyond her patients.
